Supporting University College Freiburg

Universtiy College Freiburg (UCF) was founded in 2012 at the University of Freiburg as a platform for innovative, interdisciplinary, and internationally oriented higher education. UCF and its Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) bachelor program bring together the best of two academic worlds that have shaped research and education around the globe. UCF combines the settings of a public German research university with a student-centered college institution in the spirit of American Liberal Education. Currently, 300 students from about 50 countries are enrolled in the LAS program. The pioneer cohort graduated in summer 2016. The quality of their academic training has been recognized by PhD and Master programs as well as employers and institutions around the world.

This is a unique, ambitious, and challenging endeavor, with potentially far-reaching consequences for German higher education in the 21st century. The University College Freiburg can only succeed with your support. Donations to the UCF for the purposes of research, teaching, and cultural activities are tax-deductible. The Friend of Freiburg Alumni North America are committed to fundraising on behalf of the University College Freiburg to support a number of the college's projects. Your support can go a long way to:

Help Students

- Student Award - UCF students excel in many areas and different ways. Being able to provide them with recognition beyond grades and further encouragement would create more incentives for excellence (e.g. book prizes, merit prizes, awards for research projects, etc). Make a Gift
- Mobility Scholarships - About 25% of UCF students come from abroad, and more than two-thirds spend a year abroad. Support an internationally-oriented student who does not have the means to benefit from such an opportunity. (5000€) Make a Gift
- Excursions, conferences, student projects - Help us establish a fund to support remarkable student activities that reach beyond the LAS curriculum -- for example, the student-based Global Order Project between UCF and University College Maastricht under the guidance of Prof. Luis Moreno Ocampo, former Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court in the Hague (10,000€) Make a Gift
- Cost of living scholarships - Enable under-privileged students to study Liberal Arts and Sciences at UCF through at 800 per month contribution. As a public university, minimal tuition fees are charged to international students; a comparatively small sum can change somebody's life (10,000 per year and student)

Support Teaching

- Sponsor a course - UCF has a staff of its own but also relies on external "Teaching Fellowships" for specialized areas of the Liberal Arts and Sciences curriculum, like "Responsibility and Leadership." UCF has successfully recruited experts from within and beyond the university and would like to be able to expand the pool of Teaching Fellows at UCF (10,000 €) Make a Gift
- Support a guest lecturer or professor - Academic input from international lecturers and professors has continuously benefitted the LAS program. UCF has excellent contacts around the world and welcome visiting academic staff for six weeks to one-year periods (10,000 to 100,000 €) Make a Gift
- Establish a lectureship - Three-year post-doctoral programs would enable UCF to intensify and/or newly develop specific areas of teaching and research. The LAS curriculum is intentionally open and flexible regarding new academic fields and teachers! (75,000€ per lectureship and year)
Make a Gift
- Endow a professorship - Two interdisciplinary professorships in Science and Technology Studies and Epistemology and Theory of Science  form the backbone of the LAS program. Especially with regard to the LAS majors that were developed according to the university's strengths in research and teaching, joint UCF-University Professorships would greatly benefit both UCF and the university (1,500,000€ for five years). Make a Gift

Develop the College

- Establish a new lecture series or publication - UCF broadcasts its activities, e.g. with the yearly public lecture series on interdisciplinary academic themes or its publication series "Septem." Your contribution could extend such activities, especially at the international level (from 5000€)
Make a Gift
- Enhance the learning and teaching infrastructure - UCF is situated in the "Alte Universität," one of the university's oldest and most atmospheric buildings, and has established a working infrastructure from its public funding. Nonetheless, investments in IT equipment, labs, library, guest housing, and other facilities could add more 21st century to a 16th century setting (5000€) Make a Gift
- Student facilities - UCF would love to be able to provide its students and staff with open spaces such as common rooms, cafeterias, and more for academic and non-academic interaction amongst each other, as well as with the university and the general public of Freiburg (from 100,000€) Make a Gift
- The most ambitious dream for UCF is the complete renovation of the currently vacant loft of the historical "Alte Universität" building. This would provide a perfect setting for UCF and create a major landmark for the university, right in the center of Freiburg (10,000,000€) Make a Gift

At the University of Freiburg, UCF has a powerful institutional and intellectual base. Its resilient public funding makes the university independent, accessible, and reliable. UCF is fully committed to this proven German model of research and higher education. However, UCF is not simply an innovative higher education institution. We aim to transform higher education in Freiburg and in Germany, and aspire to have a global impact beyond Freiburg. To this end, the support of North American alumni through Friends of Freiburg can make all the difference in achieving international results.
